Much of Leonor Fini's work as an artist and illustrator drew on the Surrealism's pre-occupations with dreams, sex and death, but although she exhibited with the Surrealists she did not consider herself part of the movement. Lee Miller made this portrait a few weeks before the outbreak of war during a visit to the home of Max Ernst and Leonora Carrington where Leonor Fini was staying.
