Description Roland Penrose met the Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies in Paris and was so impressed by his work that he wrote the artist’s biography which was published in 1978. The strong narrative and political protest hidden in the abstract surface of Tàpies’s work appealed strongly to Penrose, but served to get Tàpies in trouble with Spain’s Franco regime which was notoriously intolerant of dissidents, and at one point gave the artist a term in jail. Lee Miller went on several of the research trips to Barcelona and photographed Tàpies in his studio and his home. It was the last portrait shoot of her life, and she died in 1977 before the book was published. Published in Portrait of Picasso by Roland Penrose, 1956, page 141, Lund Humphries, London.
