Description Lee visited Romania with Roland in 1938 and traveled widely in rural areas. The animal’s horn mirrors the sweep of the struts on the side of the cart, and this together with the question as to why the ox should be in the cart gives us a provocative puzzle. One of the handful of her own photographs that Lee Miller allowed to hang in her home during her lifetime. 'On the Road' was taken when she was travelling through the Romania with Roland Penrose, Lena Constante and Harry Brauner, recording the folk songs and traditions of the travelling Roma. A few years later, after she moved to live with Roland in London, Lee printed it large format and it was exhibited along with three of her other photographs in 'The Surrealism Today' exhibition that was mounted by 'the Surrealist group in England' at the Zwemmer Gallery, London June 1940.
