Lee Miller and Roland, newly in love, decided to spend the August of 1937 in Mougins, with friends such as Paul and Nusch Eluard, Leonora Carrington, Max Ernst, and Man Ray and his partner Ady Fidelin.
Picasso was staying at the Hotel Vaste Horizon with Dora Maar. Here, Lee has captured the artist somewhat unawares, adding a touch of surrealism with the spots of his scarf seemingly continuing into his fellow guest's shirt. Picasso found himself so beguiled by Lee he painted her portrait at least five times.
