Description Jaime Sabartés had been Picasso’s friend since their youth in Barcelona when they were both desperately poor. When Picasso’s fortunes improved he hired Sabartés as his secretary, a post he held for many years. Sabartés had a mournful and serious nature that made him the butt of a great many jokes by Picasso and everyone else, including Lee Miller with this portrait where he seems to be communicating with a sausage.
